In aviation interviews you're often asked if you're "Willing to relocate?", especially if you live far from the new potential job or the aircraft in question. Sometimes they ask it if you plan to commute or live in the same city.

In those cases the answer is obvious – you wouldn’t interview at a job in another state if you weren’t willing to relocate or commute. But, they may have other offices and want to know if relocation is a possibility if needed.

Think about it before your next interview... Are you willing to relocate?

Feeds are a way for websites to distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Three Traits for Success in Employment and Life

Career Counselors have identified three traits that successful people possess. These three traits influence not only our potential for success and happiness in our work, but also our general attitude toward life.

Positive Thoughts
What we think determines what we do. Many thoughts go through our minds as we attempt to meet our employment goals or to overcome life's problems. People who are successful in meeting their goals or overcoming problems tend to think differently than do people who are not satisfied.

Successful people think they can
Most successful people expect to succeed when they set a goal or face a problem

Unsuccessful people think they cant
Most unsuccessful people expect to fail when they set a goal or face a problem

If you think you can, you can
Think about the simple statement above. Successful people believe in themselves they think they can, therefore they can. Successful people make a whole-hearted commitment of effort necessary to overcome obstacles, thereby allowing them to succeed

If you think you cant, you cant
Unsuccessful people often lack confidence in their ability to achieve goals or to face life's many challenges. Since they expect to fail, they don't make the commitment of effort necessary to tackle the barriers that block their paths to success. They either try half-heartedly or simply give up

The following statements compare the differences between successful and unsuccessful people:

Successful people:

Expect success

Think they can

Try whole heartedly

Make a commitment of effort

Keep trying

Unsuccessful people:

Expect failure

Think they cant

Try half heartedly

Do not make a commitment of effort

Give up

Henry Ford was the founder of the Ford Motor Company and the originator of the assembly line. He dropped out of school at 15. He failed in business five times before succeeding. He said: If you think you can, you can; if you think you cant, you cant; either way, your right!

Negative Thoughts
We all develop negative thoughts, untrue beliefs, about ourselves, our ability to overcome problems and our ability to attain goals such as employment. We must learn to challenge these untrue beliefs. If we mistakenly believe that a problem is permanent, we are unlikely to do anything to overcome it. If we mistakenly believe that we are powerless to face our problems, we are not motivated to act.

Our self-thoughts, beliefs, are the way we view ourselves and help us to determine our place in the world

We often use our beliefs to predict whether we will succeed or fail when faced with problems

Most of us develop beliefs about ourselves that aren't true.

Successful People:

Believe that their problems are temporary challenges

Believe tat they have control of their lives.

Unsuccessful People:

Believe that their problems are permanent

Believe that they are powerless in the face of their problems

Three Traits for Success

#1 Successful people take credit for their successes even small ones.

Successful people know that big successes often result from achieving many small successes. Successful people understand that all small successes or completed actions are important take credit from them. A big success is when we attain a goal or overcome a problem.

Taking credit for our actions or small successes helps us to understand that often the difference between success and failure is one small action. In approaching a problem or challenge, we don't always do everything right. By paying attention to the importance of each of our positive actions, we increase the likelihood of success.

- Review daily your big and small successes.
- Write them down each day.
- Save them so that you can go back later to see the various problems you've overcome and goals you've met.
- Help family and friends daily to take credit for their successes as well! By helping them, you'll help yourself to become even more successful.

#2 Successful people try harder if they fail the first time.

Successful people know the simple truth of Ben Franklins famous saying: If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. By giving up, unsuccessful people guarantee that they wont change their lives; by doing nothing, they actually make their false beliefs that they are powerless to change their lives come true!

Sometimes we set the right goals, use the right plan/actions but are stopped by the unexpected.
Even successful people have a bad day.
Sometimes we set goals which are not realistic.
Trying harder wont help us if we set goals which are unrealistic or impossible. A goal is a commitment of effort that you make to yourself. Successful people plan to succeed by setting realistic goals for themselves.

Update your online job application and resume

Today is a great day to update your online job application and resume in the Avjobs Applicant Portal system. Please take the time to review and update all of the pages of the online job application so that employers have a complete view of your experience and background. If you have completed as much as you care to complete, you should at least review the information to insure that your contact information is accurate and up to date. And remember, all resume search results are sorted by edit date (most current at the top of the list).

To do this, just log into your applicant account at http://members.avjobs.com, click on Job Application and then click on Update Your Online Job Application & Resume Now at the bottom of the instructions and information area.

All of the fields in the application are searchable by our participating employers so if a question, or an entire section of the application does not apply to you leave it blank. Not all information provided in the application is displayed on your resume. Employers can Drill Down to see the detail as necessary, but only pertinent resume information is displayed to Employers in their summary or Resume View to provide a clear, professional aviation standards overview of your experience.

Additional Information
The recruiters and hiring managers that use the Avjobs system are usually pretty busy trying to find qualified, motivated applicants like you. Unfortunately, there are many who will view incomplete job applications and resumes as UNQUALIFIED simply due to the lack of information provided. Many remember the names of the applicants they have encountered with incomplete documentation and never look at their credentials ever again (remembering it was incomplete last time and thinking it is still incomplete) in an effort to save time.

Make a great first impression and increase your success rate by completing your online job application and resume in our system right now. You never know when an employer will be viewing your resume or how they will react if it is incomplete.

NOTE: Our Online Job Application was created with the help of 17 major airlines, and other large aerospace and aviation companies. It specifically collects the information recruiters and hiring managers need to make their decision to contact you and move on to the next step, or move on to the next applicant. The Aviation Standards Resume Format used by Avjobs is widely preferred in the industry.

Additional sections or areas of the online job application and resume builder system that you should complete as soon as possible include:

1. Personal Information
Its important that your resume be as strong and positive as possible. With your resume before them, employers can visualize how you will operate within the framework of their corporation, and how your skills and abilities will be utilized in the future development of the company.

2. Employment Summary
Enter your employment history for the last 10 years. You should start with your most recent employer, and then continue in descending order. History older than 10 years is not necessary, unless you feel strongly about the information, or the position is directly related to the type of position you are looking for now. When entering your current position (present employer, student, or military), be sure to complete the date fields. When selecting a day, the first or last day of the month is acceptable if you cannot remember the exact dates. Sub-sections of the Employment Summary include:

a. Unemployed
Enter all unemployed periods longer than 30 days in the last 10 years.

b. Additional
Make the most of your skills and strengths when answering these questions.

3. Military History
If you served in the armed forces, describe your length of service, branch of service, rank, and discharge and/or reserve status. Employers generally react favorably to military service experience as it shows leadership, commitment, and dedication.

4. Education Summary
Enter your education and training history. This includes any College, Trade or Military School, Licenses and Certification history. Be sure to include additional training you may have overlooked such as First Aid, CPR, AED, and any other certifications. Emphasize the skills, education and training that specifically pertain to the position you're looking for now. List the highlights of your education and training that clearly fit the type of skills employers are looking for in their job descriptions. Sub-sections of the Education Summary include:

a. High School
b. College
c. Trade School
d. Military School
e. Licenses
f. Certificates

5. Pilot Supplement
This section provides employers with the necessary overview of your piloting experience, training and background and is the only pertinent information requested by recruiters and hiring managers during this stage of the application and recruiting process. Additional piloting information will be requested as it becomes necessary in the interview process. Please try to include your skills and background within the provided fields. Be as specific and thorough as possible. Provide full and abbreviated names when listing aircraft flown. List and describe your Flight Education, Training, Licenses and Certificates in the Education area as they are related to learning and not considered actual piloting experience.

6. Mechanic Supplement
This area applies to all mechanical experience not just A&P Mechanic experience. Review the skills and equipment listed in this section to identify the specific mechanical skills you possess. Check the corresponding proficiency buttons to indicate your level of expertise.

Important Note
You should revisit the online job application and resume builder frequently to update your contact information, work history, level of experience and additional training as you continue your job search. When employers search or view resumes in our system, the results are sorted by edit date with the most current at the top of the list. Keep your credentials current, particularly your contact information & telephone number and update your job application and resume frequently to stay at the top of the search results list.

What's the best way to find out what it's like to work at a company? Ask the people who work there! In other words, ya gotta network.

When conducting research on a particular company, networking can benefit you in two ways:

It will give you an "insider's perspective" on what it's like to work at the company; and

It will give you a chance to make allies with people that can help you land a job. Many companies have employee referral programs, so getting to know current employees may be one way to get in the door.

When you find someone, send him/her a friendly e-mail naming the friend that you have in common and mentioning that you are considering applying to the company in question. Ask if they would mind answering some questions about what it's like to work at the company.

If the person doesn't respond to your e-mail or says "no," don't take it personally. Instead, look for someone else who might be able to offer insight.

If the person agrees, consider asking questions such as:

What's the company culture like?

Are employees generally happy there?

What can they tell you about _________ department?

Could they direct you to anyone else who might provide useful information?

Remember to be professional and polite. Spell-check and grammar-check your e-mail before you send it. Keep it brief and make sure that it won't take an inordinate amount of time to answer.

Most companies are looking for individuals that will improve their bottom line. If you display knowledge not only about a company but also their competition, you will likely give the impression that you are conscientious, up-to-date, driven and knowledgeable -- qualities that most employers highly value.

Successful salary negotiation occurs after the job applicant and the employer share a common understanding of the job and the applicants willingness and ability to do it.

You're ready to negotiate when:

You've gathered information about the aviation labor market and you know how much a job like this typically pays

You've determined your needs and wants

You've gathered sufficient information about the employer, the work, the environment and the people with whom you will be working with

You've done all you can to convey your willingness and ability to do the job, and the employer has all the information needed to reach a decision about you

Typically, salary negotiation occurs toward the end of the interview or after the applicant receives a job offer from the employer

What is the job worth?
It is important to remember that the relationship between the employer and the employee is a business relationship. Typically, employers analyze the dollar amount they have invested in employees and forecast the financial return they are likely to receive based on the efforts of the employees.

Employers know that new employees usually cost them more than they can expect in productivity. In time, new employees become experienced and more productive. Then the employer eventually breaks even and finally returns a dollar for each dollar of effort

Savvy job hunters know how long it will take to bring them up to speed. Their salary demands are based on that knowledge. Also, they coincide salary negotiations with their break-even period.

Gain leverage:
Postpone salary discussions until you've shown that you are the best candidate for the job. Mentioning specific sums of money in the preliminary information-gathering stages can eliminate you from the list of potential candidates before you've ha a chance to show what you can do.

Salary question on the applicant form:
Answer, Negotiable

On a resume:
Say, Salary is negotiable

At the job interview:
Let the employer be the first to mention salary.

Wait until you know more about the job and the employer and the employer knows you before you price yourself too low or too high.

If the employer begins discussing salary in the early part of the interview, postpone negotiations by saying something like, Id like to discuss that but could you tell me a little more about the job first, to continue the information-gathering phase.

It pays to gather information about the aviation labor market before you negotiate your salary.

What the job entails. Analyze all the details you've been given by the employer

What typical earnings are according to aviation industry standards.
→ See department of Labor statistics at your local city or county government office.
→ Write or telephone trade associations.
→ Take a look at the current Avjobs Salary Information.
→ Ask the reference librarian at your public library.
→ Search the Avjobs job system for comparable jobs.
→ Carry out informational interviews

What typical earnings are within the company and how they compare to the rest of the aviation industry.
Find out the name of the company's closest competitor and ask them what they would pay. Its likely to be similar

Find out if there are many other applicants.
How do they compare with you? This is difficult to investigate but employers will sometimes tell you up-front

Find out how long they've been looking for someone to fill the job.
Employers may mention it in passing. The longer a position has be vacant, the more an employer may be willing to pay

After you receive a job offer:

Is when you have the most negotiating leverage

Step back from the situation and evaluate the offer

List the pros and cons of accepting the offer as it stands

Determine what is acceptable and what could be better

In most cases - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT THE OFFER ON THE SPOT. Mention that you would like to think it over, and provide your answer tomorrow or in the next few days.

Applicants should avoid accepting a salary that they feel is too low, so that they don't feel cheated in the long run.

Making a counteroffer
Many companies and governmental agencies have a published salary scale or range. Salary ranges allow for differences between candidates skills, qualifications and the amount of training they will need. If the job you seek is covered by a salary range your goal is to show that you have the strengths, skills and enthusiasm to merit a salary near the top of the range.

If the salary offer is low, make a counteroffer:

Compare it to aviation industry norms

Compare it to past work you've done that is similar, for which you were paid more

If you have a higher offer from another company, this is the time to mention it.
Notice that in each case you peg your counteroffer to a real-world example of higher earnings. State your case simply without being arrogant. Employment is a "2-Way" street. You can always say "No, Thank you"

If the employer wont raise the starting salary and you still want the job:

Ask them to describe the conditions under which they would be willing to pay more

Focus on how you can either save the company money or generate more revenue for the company

Negotiate a contingency that your salary will be increased in 3 to 6 months if your work meets a certain criterion that you both agree upon. Get it in writing so that you have a record of the agreement in case the person who hires you leaves the company

Is there another aspect of the job offer that you can negotiate, besides the salary? For instance, could you have 3 weeks of paid vacation instead of 2 weeks, or maybe more benefits?

Employers need to avoid paying too much, so that they don't feel that the applicant has exploited them and is more of a burden than and asset.

When you accept an offer, do it graciously and get everything in writing.

Successful salary negotiation:

Is neither adversarial nor antagonistic. The employer and the applicant are not enemies

Gives both the employer and the applicant the feeling that they've won

        Employers are waiting for you!

Employers are waiting for you!

Participating aviation employers want you to apply for jobs.

Top 3 reasons to APPLY, APPLY, APPLY.

#3 - Practice Interviewing.
It is incredibly important to continue to practice your interview skills. And there is NO better way to practice than with an actual job from an actual aviation related employer. Take the opportunity to polish your skills and become comfortable with your ability to answer questions as well as ask them professionally. You should schedule and go on at least 20 interviews to be ready for the job you want.

#2 - Networking.
What better way to network, than with the actual people you are trying to get to? Through the interview, you may find other job opportunities within that company or even with another company. Remember you must go thru one door to get to the next.

#1 - Jackpot.
You never know, it could turn out to be the dream job you never knew about. We have even seen companies use a "Dummy Job" or a "Front Job" to filter out unqualified candidates, when they are actually hiring for other positions that they are not advertising. No matter what, you will gain experience for your next job or career move.

We cannot stress this enough...

We strongly recommend that you APPLY for any job that looks interesting to you.

Remember, getting a job is a two way street. Many job seekers assume that the employers have the upper hand, and that they have many applicants to choose from.

Give yourself the "upper-hand"; apply for as many positions as you possibly can, in the end, you are the one who decides whether you want to take the job.

At Avjobs, we have now made it easier to shine a light on YOUR value as an employee.

Now editing features, like those found in desktop editing applications like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice, provide easy and powerful solutions for our users. This means that as an applicant you now have a greater chance to stand out in the crowd with a more polished resume.

Understanding How This Amplifies Your Visibility in the System

The online application process provides a series of questions that when answered, automatically translates the application into an organized "Aviation Standards" Based resume. Whether you already have a refined resume or would like help building one, Avjobs online job application has many benefits and is worth taking the time to complete.

Increase your Chances with Employers

As an applicant, it is important for you to understand how the job application increases your chances with employers. When employers access our system and are searching for potential interview candidates, they are inputting key words like you would in any standard search engine. Once you fill in the job application, your resume now becomes 100% searchable for any employer in the system. The more fields you complete, the more chances you have to turn up in search results. The more you are in search results, the more chances for interviews.

Why this is Important for You

We often hear from applicants that they do not understand why they need to complete the job application when they already have a completed resume. Beyond being displayed in the search terms for employers, there are many reasons to complete to the job application. When seeking a new job, it is best to give yourself every opportunity. This is a chance to market yourself in an additional way and lead more employers in the system to find you!

If you take the time now to enter and regularly refresh your application, you are giving employers what they are looking for, access to all of your information in a standardized format. Being the channel of communication for both applicants and employers, Avjobs has developed questions tailored to employer requests. These answers are not often found in a standard resume, but answering them in the job application allows you to schedule that interview faster. Now their one minute glance can put you in the “Interview” pile and steer you towards your future. Furthermore, now the formatting tool allows you to take information in your existing resume and “copy and paste” it into the job duties. No more retyping or self-formatting when showcasing your accomplishments in previous employment. It’s a breeze!

Think of the job application as an alternative tool to revisit areas of your job history you haven’t explored in a while. It can jog memories to answer interview questions more completely, provide a way to highlight why employers should hire you, and help find effective resume material not previously considered.

How to Maximize This Benefit

As an applicant, you want all eyes on your resume. To do this, your resume needs to resonate with target company’s needs and show how you solve their problems. Avjobs recommends highlighting what made you the best at your past or current positions.

Created marketing tools for hangar lease options resulting in full capacity in one year

Assisted in compiling month end financial analysis, saving the comptroller over 25% of his time

Generated a template system to prepare quotes for brokers and customers, cutting the return communication time by 50%
