Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute (AMSI)

MSU Denver seeks a visionary manufacturing industry experienced Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute (AMSI) to lead a dual mandate: (1) operate an Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence (COE) that serves Colorado manufacturers through demos training microcredentials and sponsor partnerships; and (2) stand up and steward a Masters of Science in Innovation (Industry 4.0/5.0) graduate program emphasizing AI-driven model-based manufacturing with a strong human-centered (Industry 5.0) and space/hirel quality focus. The Director is the Institutes chief integrator-linking industry faculty labs and students-and is accountable for growth quality compliance and impact. Reports to: Dean College of Aerospace Computing Engineering and Design (CACED) Type: 12-month administrative staff (endowed directorship) with potential teaching load by mutual agreement

Key Responsibilities

1) Institute Leadership and Strategy

  • Set and execute the Advanced Manufacturing programs mission vision and annual plan; drive the programs strategy by advancing industry relevant technologies practices and partnerships that prepare students for immediate workforce impact and address critical manufacturing workforce gaps while ensuring alignment with college and university strategy budgets and policies.
  • Maintain a high-functioning Advisory Board with an outcomes/KPI dashboard (sponsors student credit hours enrollments-including 4+1 badge revenue placements).

2) Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence (COE)

  • Lead and scale the fee-for-service + partnerships engine: demonstrations corporate training (standard/custom) microcredentials/certificates applied R&D capstone sponsorships and selective lab/equipment access.
  • Leverage Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association (CAMA) networks and state/federal awards (OEDIT EDA) to convene industry partners launch high-impact programming and generate applied industry projects.
  • Standardize scoping IP safety and KPI templates for company projects; ensure prudent financial management and risk controls.

3) Graduate Program: MS in Innovation (Industry 4.0/5.0)

  • Utilize industry-driven principles aligned with college program requirements to lead the launch and continuous improvement of the MS in Innovation featuring an AMSI core in AI for Production Digital Thread/Model-Based Engineering Metrology and Automation and Reliability/Cleanliness for Space with both Plan A (Thesis) and Plan B (Industry Studio) pathways.
  • Build the Center of Excellence (COE) MS pipeline: make COE badges prereqs that stack into the MS; ensure a reliable sponsor flow for Industry Studios each term.
  • Coordinate cross-college delivery (Aerospace/Design/Engineering/Computer Science/Aviation) 4+1 pathways assessment artifacts (FAI/NCR SPC dashboards) and accreditation-ready documentation.

4) Academic and Student Success (selective teaching load)

  • Partner with academic departments to align curricula with current and emerging industry needs; strategically schedule AMSI-tagged laboratories; and expand internships apprenticeships and graduate placement with manufacturing employers.
  • When teaching model industry best practices in human-in-the-loop and ethical AI along with rigorous model-based work instructions and documentation (e.g. MBWI digital travelers scan-to-model overlays).

5) Laboratory and Compliance Stewardship

  • Oversee AMSI labs/testbeds (additive/hybrid CAM metrology/vision teleops cobot VR/AR vacuum/outgassing) for safe scheduled cross-program use and cross-program access while maximizing opportunities for industry collaboration and applied research.
  • Enforce OT/robotics safety lockout/tagout (LOTO) segmented networks and (as applicable) export control/ITAR segregation and documentation supporting industry partnerships through rigorous documentation and adherence to regulatory standards.

6) Advancement Grants and External Relations

  • Partner with Advancement on gifts/sponsorships; write/manage grants; grow fee-for-service revenue; cultivate tenants/partners in the AES building.

7) Administration and Reporting

  • Prepare annual reports budget plans and periodic reviews; supervise and evaluate AMSI staff; manage MOUs with academic units and external partners.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in a technical field from an accredited institution required or an equivalent combination of education and experience defined as 10 or more years of manufacturing industry experience (technical and managerial) with a minimum of 5 years in higher education or related learning / training environments.

- Proven industry experience leading complex manufacturing/technology initiatives.

- Demonstrated success building partnerships with industry public agencies and community stakeholders; experience supervising staff and managing budgets.

- Evidence of excellence in one or more AMSI pillars: Industry 4.0 services AI for production/analytics digital thread/MBE metrology/automation space/hirel quality or workforce programs.

Preferred Qualifications

- Advanced degree (MS/MBA/PhD) in a relevant field; experience in higher education (teaching/advising) with diverse urban student populations.

- Track record in grantwriting/fundraising fee-for-service program design and badge/microcredential ecosystems that articulate into degrees.

- Experience implementing robotics/automation safety OT/ICS security and/or export-control practices in academic or industrial settings.

Success Metrics

- COE activity ramp (demos/training delivered sponsor count badge uptake) and positive contribution margin against plan.

- MS launch milestones met (curriculum approvals 4+1 policy first cohort size/quality) and Industry Studios delivered with KPI dossiers.

- Lab utilization and safety compliance; advisory board engagement; shared KPI dashboard published each term.

Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications analysis of internal equity and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $112131 - $135537. This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
