Description, duties, responsibilities
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) operates a fleet of one hundred and one (101) H65 aircraft. These aircraft return from various air stations to the Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) Short Range Recovery (SRR) Division in Elizabeth City NC to complete planned depot maintenance (PDM) every forty-eight (48) months. During this time the aircraft are completely disassembled cleaned repaired repainted and built back up before being returned to the fleet. The USCG requires aircraft maintenance services to perform depot level maintenance to sheet metal and composite structures electrical and electrical components and routing and verification of components equipment and supplies on the SRR/H65 aircraft.The Aircraft Mechanic I troubleshoot malfunctions repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural componentsReads and interprets technical maintenance manuals service bulletins technical orders blueprints sketches engineering data and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctions or damaged componentsThe mechanic repairs replaces and rebuilds damage to aircraft structures or sheet metal systems such as wings and fuselage and functional components including rigging and surface controls using hand tools power tools machines and equipment such as shears sheet metal brake rivet guns and drillsThe mechanic will examine and prepare parts and items to locate defects; will prepare defective surfaces for successive operations by sanding scraping applying prepared solvents and cleaning agentsThe mechanic will be required to follow work orders as assigned by the Program Manager. All work is subject to GovernmentQuality Assurance (QA) review in process and upon completion for compliance with requirements instructions specifications shop practices and proceduresThe mechanic will work independently and complete all repairs and modifications in a timely manner; with minimal rework or discrepancies notedAbility to work night shiftAbility to demonstrate work methods and techniquesAbility to read understand and apply trade or administrative guides such as technical manuals technical orders blueprints sketches and other related documentsAbility to lift reach bend walk pull sit stand crouch stoop kneel and stretch for prolonged periods of May be required towork in cramped awkward and strained positions or required to climb ladders work platforms scaffolding and aircraft structuresKnowledge skill and ability to follow appropriate safety procedures common to the tradeKnowledge of specific hazardous materials and hazardous wastes procedures is necessary including the proper fitting and usage of protective gear and completion of related trainingMust be able to carry items up to 40 pounds or heavier with assistance from other workers or weight lifting devicesMay be required to wear cumbersome personal protective equipment and clothing for Hazardous Material operationsSpecialized experience in aviation sheet metal repair and experience related to USCG aircraft specific models is highly desirableExperience in aircraft sheet metal structures to include maintenance and repair with a minimum of five years practical experienceTechnical capability/experience with aircraft airframes components and substructures. Should include maintenance of primary secondary and tertiary structuresExperience with USCG H65 aircraft is highly desirableTechnical capability to assist in planned depot maintenance of USCG aviation assetsAbility to conduct research using USCG data systems such as Technical Manual Application System (TMAPS) and Microsoft Office Suite or similar type systems - Minimum of five (5) years of practical experience is desiredFamiliarity with Eurocopter Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals or similar OEM manuals with the ability to research maintenance history procedures and component limitations desiredTechnical capability to deal with aircraft upgrades and aging aircraft sustainment issues. Experience with new component integration and developing repair or replacement strategies for airframes components and/or substructuresCapability to work in regulated areas with toxic materials present including hexavalent chromiumand cadmium.
