Responsibilities

The FAA Security Engineer role supports the FAA Security Lead and Technical Team at the William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace. The Security Engineer will help achieve security and technical milestones for the procurement verification validation test and deployment of modern IP-VCSs and Air-to-Ground Protocol Converters (APCs). Responsibilities include providing technical expertise on system implementations used to address security controls analyzing investigating and tracking security risks and/or issues on FAA and vendor systems and generating security artifacts using Linux skills. Collaborate with stakeholders from other functional and technical organizations to achieve security authorization for FAA ATC VCS systems and tools.

Responsibilities (additional context)

The FAA VS&R Program Office manages seven programs delivering critical voice communications and legal recording systems for high-availability ATC communications within the NAS. It oversees the acquisition of modern IP ATC Voice Communications Systems (VCSs) including requirements development procurement verification validation testing implementation and deployment and manages full life cycle sustainment and logistics for legacy ATC VCSs.

Required Qualifications

The candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Information System Security Cybersecurity or similar discipline plus 6-15 years of relevant hands-on experience.

Knowledge skills and abilities (across Linux System Administration Networking and System Security):

  • Linux System Administration: Robust hands-on experience on the Linux terminal scripting (bash) package and server configuration; strong understanding of Linux OS structure; experience with automation tools (Ansible Docker Jenkins).
  • Networking: OSI model understanding network design VLAN/subnetting routers/switches network protocol analyzers (Wireshark); IPv4/IPv6 addressing and subnetting; firewall configuration.
  • System Security: System/port/vulnerability scanning findings validation and remediation; knowledge of security standards (NIST 800-53 HSPD-23 ISO 27001); experience with penetration testing; cryptographic protocols; experience documenting security requirements for SOWs CDRLs and DIDs.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge or experience with FAA NAS strong logical reasoning participation in technical interchange meetings clear verbal and written communication familiarity with C/C++ Python Golang or Rust version control (Git) software design patterns and embedded Linux system design; performance optimization is a plus. Knowledge of common data structures and algorithms is a plus.
