Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Food Science Human Nutrition and the Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR) and the Biocentury Research Farm (BCRF) seek applicants for an adjunct assistant professor position focused on liaising with the industry partners in the City of Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids is the home of many grain and food processing industries. ISU and Cedar Rapids have formed a partnership to support this position.
The Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR) is a multidisciplinary research development and technology transfer program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University focused on new processes products and markets for corn soybeans and other Midwest crops. CCUR explores new food feed and non-food industrial uses for agricultural materials and focuses on problem-oriented research directed at expanding midwestern crop utilization. CCUR’s mission is carried out in modern pilot plant facilities and research labs. By contracting with CCUR and using the Center’s equipment and expertise commercial participants have a cost-effective way to test new products and processes without interrupting their own full-scale production systems.
The BioCentury Research Farm managed by CCUR is the first-in-the-nation integrated research and demonstration facility dedicated to biomass production and processing. Biomass includes both lignocellulosic crops crop residues and grain. The BCRS accelerates innovation and production capacity associated with biobased fuels chemicals and products. Collaborations for developing sustainable technologies provide solutions that pave the way to meet national energy economic and environmental directives.
The position is 65% research and 35% outreach. Research expectations will be within food and biological manufacturing that aligns with the needs of the Cedar Rapids industries. The liaison will build research partnerships between Cedar Rapids companies and ISU faculty and centers including the CCUR and BCRF. The liaison is expected to seek out funding opportunities and develop proposals specific to forming these partnerships between ISU connections and Cedar Rapids industries. Additionally communication of these successes and organized engagement of Cedar Rapids companies in promotion of these successes will be expected. Independent research projects that address complex issues of the industries will also be possible.
The position requires exceptional skills in diplomacy and tact as the candidate will be communicating on behalf of ISU with high-level industry VPs managers and researchers. Confidentiality and trust-building is essential for success. Work will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Keener Director of the Center for Crops Utilization Research and the Biocentury Research Farm.
Required Education and Experience
A PhD in agricultural chemical biological or food engineering food science or related discipline and evidence of leadership is required.
Preferred Education and Experience
Demonstrated success in grant writing; work experience in food or grain manufacturing; experience with industry-university partnerships; and demonstrated success in collaborative projects.
