General Statement
Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University Montana State University (MSU) is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently the University hosts an enrollment of over 16000 students including approximately 2000 graduate students. MSU is classified as one of 108 U.S. Research Universities (very high research activity) by the Carnegie Foundation.
MSU is located in Bozeman Montana an extended community of about 70000 nestled in the Rocky Mountains in Southwest Montana. In addition to providing access to an extraordinary ecosystem for teaching and research programs Bozeman is renowned for year-round recreational and cultural opportunities to include access to world class ski areas multiple blue ribbon trout streams and the Gallatin National Forest. The local airport is served by seven national airlines with over twenty flights a day to nine cities.
Named an All American City Bozeman boasts high-quality medical facilities a very low crime rate many fine restaurants acclaimed public and private schools a symphony orchestra and choir an annual opera and nationally known events such as the Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts held in early August of each year. Powder Magazine identified Bozeman with “three distinctly different” major ski resorts within an hour’s drive as the number one place to live and ski in its November 2010 Magazine. Bizjournals.com ranked Bozeman #2 on the list of American Dreamtowns – small towns that offer the best quality of life without metropolitan hassles. The K-12 educational system growing reputation of Montana State University and pristine natural environment of the area combine to make Bozeman one of America’s most desirable university towns. Bozeman is located in the beautiful Gallatin Valley 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park.
Agriculture is the largest segment of the Montana economy and the dominant land use in the state. Beef cattle production is a vital component of Montana agriculture. Montana State University has a long and distinguished history of working with Montana beef cattle producers and across academic disciplines to address the needs of beef cattle producers in Montana and the greater Rocky Mountain West and Northern Great Plains regions. The Animal and Range Sciences program at Montana State University is growing and this position will complement existing programs in beef cattle research on-campus teaching and Extension. Ecologically economically and socially sustainable beef cattle production is an important focus of the Animal and Range Sciences Department.
Presently there are 15 Animal Science and 10 Range Science faculty in the Department. Animal Science faculty focus teaching and research programs on nutrition ruminal/gastrointestinal microbiology reproductive physiology genetics meat science and livestock production systems. Range Science faculty focus teaching and research programs on rangeland and riparian ecology livestock grazing management invasive plants forages wildlife habitat ecology and management and livestock grazing interactions with fish and wildlife. Extension specialists in the Department focus their off-campus educational efforts on beef cattle sheep equine forages and rangeland management. Currently there are 330 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students enrolled in the Department.
The Animal and Range Sciences Department is located on the MSU-Bozeman campus in the Animal Bioscience Building. This modern building is equipped with technology to deliver distance-learning programs. In addition this building has well-equipped laboratories capable of supporting a wide range of research and teaching endeavors. Our herd of 200 beef cows splits time between our 430-acre research and teaching farm located adjacent to campus and our 13750-acre Red Bluff Research Ranch located 35 miles from campus. Collaborative research opportunities also exist at the 7000-acre Northern Agricultural Research Center at Havre MT (350 beef cows) and the 55000-acre USDA-ARS Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory at Miles City MT (1400 beef cows). Duties and Responsibilities

The Beef Cattle Specialist will work statewide to complement and expand existing education and research efforts at MSU and increase MSU’s capacity to positively impact Montanans. The incumbent will provide educational leadership to individuals and organizations related to beef cattle production and management including county/reservation Extension faculty beef cattle producers youth state livestock and commodity organizations and related industries or organizations. The incumbent will develop professional partnerships with Extension agents specialists associate specialists stakeholders and others that advance the mission of MSU Extension. The incumbent will develop and deliver educational materials and utilize a variety of delivery methods including seminars workshops mass media publications and one-on-one and small group consultations.
As a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University the successful candidate will be expected to publish in refereed journals secure extramural funding mentor and advise graduate students support department and college activities to recruit and retain undergraduate and graduate students contribute to teaching and learning efforts (on- and off- campus) and provide appropriate departmental college university and professional service.
It will be expected that the incumbent will work collaboratively on research and Extension scholarship projects with faculty within the Animal and Range Sciences Department as well as other faculty and researchers within MSU the state of Montana and the surrounding region. Extensive travel throughout the state and occasional travel outside of Montana will be required.
As an Extension Specialist the successful candidate will comply with all Extension departmental college university state and federal reporting requirements and assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.
Required Qualifications – Experience Education Knowledge and Skills
+ An earned Ph.D. degree in Animal Science or closely related field at the time of hire
+ Demonstrated knowledge of beef cattle management and production systems.
+ Demonstrated accomplishments in on- or off-campus teaching.
+ Demonstrated accomplishments in beef cattle research.
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with beef cattle producers.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience Education Knowledge and Skills
+ Demonstrated knowledge of beef cattle production systems on western U.S. rangelands.
+ Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding from multiple sources.
+ Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research-based information to non-scientific audiences both youth and adults.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop deliver and evaluate off-campus educational programs.
+ Demonstrated ability to publish in refereed scientific journals.
+ Demonstrated ability to interact collegially and collaboratively in a team environment within and across scientific disciplines and with external stakeholders
The Successful Candidate Will
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute positively to teaching scholarship and service. The successful candidate will also have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds and have a commitment to the principles of diversity and to excellence in extension programming. Will possess or be able to obtain a Montana driver’s license or have other means of reliable transportation.

The College
