Even though the airlines are in business to transport people from one place to another, they could not function without the help of many people on the ground, including those who take reservations and sell tickets, as well as those who help keep the airplanes operating on schedule.
Working Conditions
Working conditions will vary depending on the administrative position. Administrative personnel must assure department is running effectively. General office duties and administrative tasks can include: record keeping, preparing and maintaining a variety of records, entering and retrieving data into a computer, researching and compiling information from outside sources for reports, maintaining and updating files, promoting a positive public image by responding appropriately to questions by telephone and in person, set up and maintain office files (hard and soft copies), filing, and retrieval of information as required. Administrative personnel are often required to work without direct supervision and must take the necessary action to ensure date sensitive files, reports, and other data are properly tracked.
Administrative personnel must also prepare a wide variety of materials such as correspondence, reports, charts, graphs, forms and labels in a timely manner. Perform routine administrative tasks in areas such as ordering, maintaining office supplies and equipment, timesheets, including processing and completing forms and reports. Receive and screen telephone calls and mail, route to appropriate individuals, and take messages as required and respond to routine requests or questions with standardized action or answers. Schedule appointments and meetings, and reserve conference rooms as necessary. Coordinate and conduct follow-up procedures associated with executive level meetings. Make basic travel arrangements as directed. Interface with administration personnel throughout the company as well as external customers or suppliers. May prepare presentations and spreadsheets.
Typical Requirements and/or Experience
The requirements will vary depending on the type of administrative position. Many administrative positions are entry level however, previous experience or knowledge is always a plus. Many companies will consider a dynamic entry level candidate. Typical requirements include good to excellent customer service skills. Must have the ability to work in a standard office environment and operate office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers and fax machines. These personnel must have good communication skills and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Good internal and external customer service practices are essential.
Education
High School diploma or General Education degree (GED). Additional education or technical training may be necessary depending on the level of the administrative position.

The Office of Special Counsel (OSC) and the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) enforce the prohibitions against federal employment discrimination codified in the CSRA. The OSC will defer those bases of discrimination under EEOC's jurisdiction to the respective federal agency and its EEO process. The CSRA also prohibits employment discrimination in the federal government based on marital status, political affiliation and conduct which does not adversely affect the performance of the employee, none of which are within EEOC's jurisdiction. Moreover, the law defines ten other prohibited personnel practices in the federal government, all of which fall under the jurisdiction of the OSC and the MSPB.
