As a member of our Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to work on projects covering the entire range of Spectrolab’s products: everything from large and small solar panels and arrays for a variety of space applications using the world’s most efficient space solar cells to airborne searchlight, gimbal systems and ground-based high-intensity illuminated test systems.  You will also have the opportunity to directly contribute to material & design validation efforts and development programs to help shape our next-generation improvements in product, process and tooling design.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with Product, Process and Test engineers to collect metrics and data in support of product/process improvement and development initiatives, root cause investigations.

  • Perform material and component/process/software tests and experiments to validate conformance to requirements and support new supplier evaluations and generate engineering reports.

  • Assist Product Engineers in compiling and formatting analysis and production data as needed to satisfy customer reporting requirements.

  • Assist Product, Process, and Test engineers with generating and processing updates to design and production documentation.

  • Serve as a liason between Engineering and Manufacturing by providing real-time production support and buyoff of key engineering process and data review steps, and as needed real-time production training support.

  • Work with Product and Process Engineers to identify and define optimizations to production flow and manufacturing to safely and efficiently build and test the hardware in conformance with customer requirements.

  • Advance ideas for streamlining both design/documentation and manufacturing processes by applying DFMAT and LEAN principles.

  • Participate and present as needed in Technology Gate Review meetings

  • Adapt to meet changing priorities in support of manufacturing, engineering, and marketing needs.

  • Communicate effectively with a diverse group of both internal and external customers and colleagues.

You will be a motivated self-starter with experience and skills to take on additional responsibilities, such as:

  • Lead design/conformance validation and/or supplier/material evaluation experiments and root cause investigations as needed.

  • Using VBA programming to simplify/error proof both engineering/documentation and production processes

  • Creating visual process instructions, training and marketing materials using a combination of CAD, graphic illustration, programming, and video editing.

  • Using LabView, Python, C/C+/C++, SQL, and/or other programming skills, to help maintain and improve current production products and processes and to help define the automated equipment and support tooling needed for next generation products and processes.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R.  § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree preferably in Engineering/Physics/Material Science/Electronics or related discipline

  • 1 or more years of experience performing data analysis and/or reporting in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience with electrical/electronic schematics and drawings

  • Experience supporting production in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience compiling and presenting data in MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint

  • Willing and able to support evening and weekend work on an as needed basis (flexibility counts)

  • Experience working in a fast paced environment

Preferred Experience:

  • Hands-on experience with wiring and/or component bonding processes

  • Familiarity with Aerospace industry standards (NASA, IPC, etc) for soldering and crimping

  • Hands-on experience with a variety of test & evaluation equipment (power supplies, multi-meters, DAQs, etc)

  • Working with suppliers and engineers to evaluate material and component selection for both product and tooling design

  • Experience in DFMAT, IAW, 3P, or other LEAN manufacturability improvement activities

  • Familiarity with the basic physics of solar cells, Aerospace materials and assembly techniques, and a background in mechanical engineering, industrial design and/or material science.

  • Prior experience in utilizing and/or designing and implementing Automated Systems (inclusive of tooling and programming considerations)

  • Hands-on experience with drills, lathes, CNC, or other machine shop equipment

  • Experience with rapid prototyping via 3D print, WEDM, or other quick evaluation manufacturing technologies

  • Knowledge of VBA, video editing, illustrations / graphic design, AutoCAD/Inventor or familiarity with FEA and FMECA analysis techniques, SQL, Labview, C/C+/C++, Python or similar electronics/motion control command & control software programming languages, while not strictly required for this position, are also strongly desired “extra” qualifications.

  • Education/experience typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Associate) and typically 1 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Bachelor, 3 years related work experience, etc.).
