At our central Gothenburg office, we are currently looking for one or two talented Master Thesis students with a clear interest in algorithms and mathematical optimization.

Thesis assignment

At Jeppesen in Gothenburg, we work with different planning problems related to airline operations. In this thesis, the focus is on a problem related to scheduling of pilot training.

Pilots are typically qualified for a specific aircraft type. To keep or change their qualification they need to perform training on at least yearly basis. When performing a training, pilots need to conduct a series of training events during a number of days in simulators special designed to match the specific aircraft type. The training is supposed to mimic real conditions as close as possible, and pilots are therefore matched in pairs of captains and first officer. Simulators are very expensive resources and scheduling of these are important to ensure an efficient resource utilization. On the other hand, pilots in training do not contribute to airline production, hence airlines want to minimize training duration.

Trainee and Training Device Optimization (TTDO) problem consist of scheduling pilot aviation training. Central to this scheduling problem is matching of pilot students in pairs with various training resources such as flight simulators, instructors, etc.

Jeppesens current TTDO implementation models the problem as a mixed integer programming model. The model is solved using a standard column generation approach generating new tentative columns (student pair schedules) based on constraint duals. The column generation approach involves a cost and rule driven shortest path search. Current column generation algorithm is a heuristics with some mobility limitations in the solution space.

The goal of this thesis is to increase our understanding of the TTDO problem as well as improve the solver algorithm. As this is a quite new Jeppesen product, there are several ideas to be investigated

The project requires an analytical ability and, depending on the focus area, knowledge, as well as understanding of:

  • Algorithms
  • Mathematical modeling and optimization
  • Linear Integer Programming
  • Programming (Python, C++)
