Job SummaryTheAviation Safety Specialistdirects oversight and responsibility for all matters related to aviation and ground safety occupational health and environmental compliance for assigned Forward Operating Location (FOB). The Specialist ensures property safety procedures are followed in accordance with the contract and appropriate Federal state and local regulations rules and procedures.Principal Accountabilities Report and investigate all aircraft ground safety and environmental accidents to determine the cause of the accident and formulate recommendations to help prevent similar mishaps in the future. Perform extensive research dealing OSHA and environmental regulations vendor information and logistical support for safety equipment and supplies. Develop and provide written reports which are clear concise and meaningful for all ground/aviation safety and environmental matters. Provide technical support in all types of Safety/Environmental issues such as data gathering training correspondence with CONUS and OCONUS internal customers etc. Conduct briefings safety training as well as quarterly and semi-annual safety stand down meetings. Assist in maintaining accident and incident records files and reports; requires data-entry and corrections to files on an as needed basis. Conduct safety audits fire extinguisher inspections and inspections of all first aid kits and other safety related equipment. Develop and maintain information technology work orders and confirm when work has been completed. Maintain and log all purchase request items to include when received. Process Occupational Hazard Reports including investigating the hazard and ensuring mitigations are in place. May perform duties as an active member of an aircraft accident board and coordinate first responder duties during an onsite accident. Provides administrative support by maintaining all departmental files records and publications needed to support organizational activities. Perform other qualified duties as assigned.Knowledge and Skills Highly technical safety position requiring a very detail oriented individual who works well independently or in groups. Highly motivated self-starter willing to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision and an ability to remain calm and be the voice of reason in stressful situations. Demonstrate a high-degree of technical competency in the field of aviation safety mishap prevention and accident investigation. Individual shall be persistent in the face of difficult problems or challenges. Expert knowledge in the technical field of aviation safety and accident prevention and experience in use of DOD FAA NTSB or ICAO documentation is required. Knowledge of DO Air Mobile and Air Assault Operations is desirable. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of OSHA and Environmental regulations. Knowledge of how to acquire Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and understand regulatory requirements is required. Must be able to plan implement and coordinate safety and environmental programs in accordance with written regulations procedures and policies. Must be able to identify safety and environmental hazards risks and promote the reduction or elimination of potentially hazardous conditions that may lead to accidents occupational injuries illnesses deaths and safety-related financial losses. Job requires detailed data-entry of technical information necessary in assisting in the monitoring of mishap reports to ensure accuracy and completeness. The nature of this position requires assisting internal/external customers so the employee must strive to be cooperative understanding and able to work as a member of the team. Ability to pay close attention to details. Must be and will be flexible and able to change directions with the needs of the work environment and take-on additional responsibilities based on operational needs.Experience and Education Two (2) years experience as an Aviation Safety Officer/Manager or eight (8) years safety management experience. Graduate from DOD Aviation Safety and Accident Investigation Course or degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Aviation Safety. Previous experience in conducting aircraft accident investigations is highly desirable. Experience dealing with safety and environment laws rules and regulations is required. Extensive experience in risk management and mitigation. Prior experience as an instructor pilot standardization pilot and/or instrument flight examiner is desirable. Ability to obtain and maintain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) through DOS Background Investigation is a condition of continued employment. A current MRPT is desired.Physical Requirements/Working Environment Employees must not have physical restrictions or existing medical conditions that may prevent them from serving in a remote area with limited medical care. May be required to successfully compete a Tactical Survival Training course chosen by the employer and may be required to pass annual qualifications at the discretion of the employer. Must be able to run walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for up to 12 hours per day and sit for up to 8 hours per day. Special vision abilities required are close vision peripheral vision color vision depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus. To include judging three-dimensional depths. Must be able to climb stairs ramps ladders and work stands. Must be able to crouch crawl grasp or handle objects use finger dexterity bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders. Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depths. Must be able to read and interpret newspaper and typewritten print. Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear. May be required to travel to and between remote locations(s) in austere environments in varying modes of transportation. May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure. May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
