Who you are

Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking a flight surgeon to provide medical support to its space flight operations and to assist in provision of the medical care for our folks headed to space. The flight surgeon will provide screening medical risk assessment and medical care for the pilots and future astronauts prior to and after flight and will assist with the Emergency Response planning and response for the company. This position is also responsible for integrating with design and engineering teams providing consultative input for current and future space flight systems. Familiarity and experience in aviation and space medicine is crucial to the role. What a great honor this will be to serve as one of the first flight surgeons for one of the first commercial space lines as we open space to change the world for good.

Your Mission

  • Care for pilots and future astronauts before during and after flights.
  • Provide coordination of care for VG visitors (i.e. future astronaut friends and family) while in New Mexico.
  • Discover manage and prevent the various physiological responses that result from encountering exceptional environments such as high G aerobatic and space flights.
  • Enable our pilots to stay in peak condition and continue their jobs in the air/space.
  • Adhere to a firm standard of safety that also falls in line with current Virgin values and practices.
  • Work with the Chief Medical Officer to oversee the complete operation of a medical program in accordance with the direction established in the strategic plans.
  • Develop write and edit medical standards space system requirements and the evolving concept of medical operations.
  • Meet with executive leadership to discuss safety and health reports - advise accordingly.
  • The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

What you bring

  • M.D. or D.O. degree and completed an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training.
  • Prior experience working for the military or other major aerospace and space companies.
  • Ability to obtain New Mexico medical license
  • Completion of residency in Aerospace Medicine.
  • Board eligible in Aerospace Medicine (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only).
  • Must possess an aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon Senior Flight Surgeon or Chief Flight Surgeon
  • Minimum 48 months of experience as a flight surgeon (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only) space medicine operational support highly desired
  • FAA Aviation Medical Examiner certification
  • Completion of a clinical residency at a fully accredited clinical residency program board certification in specialty
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may result in irregular hours based on the flight schedule
  • Experience in generating reports that highlight potential risks or factors associated with the overall health of our pilots and future astronauts
  • Strategic approach/leading by example
  • Excellent communication and writing skills

Physical and/or Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods - 8 hours min.
  • Must be able to stoop bend crawl and being able to manoeuvre in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted).

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations applicant must be a U.S. citizen lawful permanent resident of the U.S. protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR 120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
